What is Cone Beam Imaging?
Cone beam imaging, also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), is an imaging technique that uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam to create detailed, three-dimensional images of your entire oral and facial structure. Unlike traditional X-rays, which produce two-dimensional images, CBCT provides a comprehensive view of the entire area being scanned. This technology utilizes a special type of X-ray machine that rotates around the patient’s head, capturing multiple images from different angles, which are then reconstructed into a single 3D image.
CBCT offers several advantages over traditional X-rays and CT scans. It emits a lower dose of radiation, making it safer for patients. The 3D images produced by CBCT allow for more accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and visualization of your teeth, mouth, jaw, neck, ears, nose and throat.
When is Cone Beam Imaging Used?
Cone beam imaging is used in a wide range of different dental treatments, including:
- Dental implant placement
- Evaluating the jaws and face
- Diagnosing tooth decay and other dental problems
- Diagnosing endodontic issues and planning root canals
- Analyzing dental and facial trauma
- Planing and evaluating the progress of orthodontic treatment
- Visualizing abnormal teeth
